Fountains Abbey Yorkshire 2008

[a small part of] The ruins of Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire, in 2008. The Cistercian establishment was sold to Sir Thomas Gresham by the King’s Commissioners in 1540. Sir Thomas began pulling down sections of the Abbey immediately and sold the resulting materials — stone, wood, and lead — to pay for his purchase. Not all ruins are the result of natural disasters nor the mere passage of time.
